Irish Flame Beech & Wych Elm End Grain Chopping Board — XL
An end grain board built from Irish flame beech with a touch of natural spalting, framed by two strips of wych elm on the outer edges. The beech came from the Bredin estate at Clooncallow, Ballymahon — collected, milled and dried by us.
The beech came from the Bredin estate at Clooncallow, Ballymahon — collected, milled and dried by us. The wych elm came from an estate in Donegal, harvested fifteen years ago. Wych elm is one of the scarcer Irish hardwoods and seldom turns up in workable sizes.
The grain of each strip is selected and orientated so the flame figure carries across the board, with the dark branching spalt lines and the elm at the edges giving it contrast. Spalting forms naturally in the timber as it lies, and no two pieces are ever the same. Treated with a food-safe finishing oil.
A board at 485 × 290 × 62mm and 5.2kg, built from hard, durable timber that will give a lifetime of use with the proper care and attention. End grain construction is easier on knives than a conventional board and more forgiving over years of use. A genuinely once-off piece, it would make a wonderful gift for a wedding or special birthday.
