Irish Flame Beech, Pale Beech & Reclaimed Mahogany End Grain Chopping Board — XL
An end grain board built from Irish flame beech with a single pale beech strip through the centre and two strips of reclaimed mahogany framing the outer edges. The flame beech came from the Bredin estate at Clooncallow, Ballymahon; the pale beech from Castlecor on the other side of the town. The mahogany came out of an old piano — timber cut long before anyone was thinking about sustainability, given a second life here.
The grain of each strip is selected and orientated so the flame figure carries across the face, with the pale beech down the centre and the dark mahogany at the edges giving the board its contrast. Treated with a food-safe finishing oil.
A substantial board at 490 × 295 × 63mm and a solid 6kg, built from hard, durable timber that will give a lifetime of use with the proper care and attention. End grain construction is easier on knives than a conventional board and more forgiving over years of use. A genuinely once-off piece, it would make a wonderful gift for a wedding or special birthday.
